Four Square Supermarket, Russell, New Zealand

This Four Square sits on the waterfront in Russell, in the Bay of Islands. The corrugated iron has weathered to a soft grey-brown from years of salt air, and painted straight onto the side is Mr Four Square, the grocer mascot that has marked corner stores across New Zealand since the 1950s and was later picked up by artist Dick Frizzell for his own well-known screenprints. It's a working supermarket, not a landmark, but the iron and the sign on it have aged into something people notice and remember, which is exactly the kind of material we look for.
